This workshop presents a unique opportunity for artists to immerse themselves in the dual disciplines of portrait drawing and painting, guided by Stephen Bauman and Cornelia Hernes.
Each day of this intensive five-day workshop is split into two distinct halves, each dedicated to exploring the nuances of portraiture through different mediums under the tutelage of these two artists. In the morning session, Stephen Bauman will lead students through the process of drawing a portrait. This segment is designed to deepen the understanding of form, structure, and likeness in portrait drawing. Bauman will share his techniques and philosophies for capturing the essence of a subject on paper.
The afternoon session transitions into the world of portrait painting with Cornelia Hernes. Participants will explore the complexities of color, light, and composition in painting, guided by Hernes' expert instruction. Renowned for her ability to convey emotion and depth in her portraits, Hernes will offer students a comprehensive overview of painting techniques, from color mixing to brushwork, ensuring a well-rounded approach to portrait painting.
This workshop is designed for artists seeking to refine their skills in both drawing and painting portraits. Through hands-on practice, personalized feedback, and in-depth demonstrations, students will leave with a richer understanding of portraiture as a multifaceted discipline.
Skills to be practiced:
Preparing and stretching your drawing paper
Techniques for effective live model drawing
Understanding proportions and basic anatomical structures
Graphite drawing techniques
Oil painting techniques
Mastery over organizing shadows and light in your portraits
Unique to this workshop at NSMA, your drawing and painting classes are set against the serene backdrop of rural New England in Autumn, with access to a collection of contemporary realist art along with select 19th-century paintings by renowned artists like John Singer Sargent and Dennis Miller Bunker. Let the tranquil surroundings and inspiring artworks enhance your experience as you hone your skills in portraiture.
